E. Thayer Gaston often called the father of music therapy, believed that a music therapist’s objective is to change the patterns of behavior in patients. Therefore, the interpersonal relationship with the patient takes precedence. I often think of this as a triangle with music, the client, and the music therapists. If one part of the triangle is absent, the cessation of the therapeutic value and relationships coincides.
When considering MT and TME they both have important roles to play in a hospital setting. TME can impact many patients in a short amount of time, keeping patients/families happy and calm is vital, and one of the things TME does best. TME can also share live music that a patient can listen to on his or her own time through www.kidlinks.org
However, MT digs deeper to assist patients whose needs might be more involved or care over time. MT is an important cooperative therapy with hospital staff to address the specific needs of a patient. It is the music therapist’s objective is to change the patterns of behavior in patients. Therefore, the interpersonal relationship with the patient takes precedence.
