Incorporating directions in the songs we use in sessions is a big part of what we do. Doing so addresses more than just following directions. If you think about it, there’s a lot that goes into following that direction. Initially, the client has to wait for the direction, listen to, process, then execute the direction all within a specific amount of time within the song. That’s a lot going on! As music therapists, we know how to make an intervention more challenging or simpler, if need be. For example, we can delay or slow down specific parts or we could even speed it up as well. These are just a very few things we can do as music therapists to further our client’s work. Because of our work with our clients we know when and how to adjust the song as needed in the moment. The song included in this blog post is perfect for just that. It is sung to the tune, “Sing A Rainbow” by Peggy Lee, but instead incorporates a bunch of different instrumental directions. We hope this can play a part in your sessions and feel free to modify as needed!
